Second Hand Poet is the moniker of Surrey based songwriter Jamie Tipson and his latest single 'Honestly' is actually not the single they asked me to review (sorry Jamie). (I'm getting up to date with emails this evening as Jamie had emailed me I took a listen and then saw this release).
Released 9th October 'Honestly' is his last single before his debut album An Avenue of Honest News is released tomorrow 16 October.
If the album is anything like this record or his last single 'I Wanna Watch TV' then we are in for a treat because these songs are just spectacular. Not only is an amazing songwriter, he also releases music through his own label Pretty Thing Records, who during lockdown released a compilation album involving 16 artists with all proceeds going to Help Musicians UK.
This is my second single review today, but on the first listen I was compelled to share it with you, partly because the album comes out tomorrow but also because when you discover something you love one of the great joys in life is to share the thing that brought you so much joy.
'Honestly' is not a song for the faint hearted - it's a song for the broken hearted. Like porcelain it has great beauty and fragility all wrapped up in one package. Watch the video (see below) - I was mesmerised. It's slow moving but what he's done, I think is really clever and perfectly fits the mood of the song.
When a song opens with the lyrics, "Keep your dampened heart from me; and scrub it clean from mould; I've grown fast as you fell short; in aging guilt, to meet you in thoughts" you know you're going to be in for a voyage of melancholy.
Melancholy isn't all bad though - feeling is healing and this song has created something from pain that is truly beautiful. The piano is breath taking and the vocal will blow you away.
Prepare to be moved!
