This week's Single of the Week is the brand new single from one of my favourite bands Bugeye "Summer In The City".
If you're a reader of this blog you'll know that it's been a few months since my last post. I've had to take a hiatus for personal reasons, but I'm now back and I could not think a band more fitting to feature for my first article back.
This is Bugeye's first release with new keyboard player Robyn and for me it's their finest work yet. If you imagined a space disco then this is pretty much how I would sum up this track.
It's out there, so far out there. I love their clever use of guitar riffs and synths to create a disco sounding, funky indie anthem, but the cleverness doesn't stop there. Their lyrics are also an incredibly astute view on the throw away dating culture we find ourselves in, in 2022.
Speaking about the single the band said “‘Summer In The City’ is a song that explores the highs and lows of life in the city from feeling like you’re winning in life to turning a corner to tensions and violence, to dating app cringeworthy dating and the death of David Bowie. It is a song that highlights our fickle nature and our scrolling boredom which is reflected in the lyrics and the swagger of the vocals.”
The video for the track is out tomorrow Friday 26th August and was directed by the incredible talented Laura Jean Marsh (Giddy Stratospheres). I was lucky enough to be invited by Bugeye to go down and take part in the video and working up close with such a talented director and cast was an experience I won't ever forget. The video is set around a club and no spoilers from me, but it's as far out as the song.
I asked my 17 year old daughter who is incredibly discerning her opinion on the track when it came out last Friday. Her response was that if it came on the radio she would turn it up. The kid's got taste!
Summing this track up in one word - sizzling
