Shine A Light Sunday: Syfta

Syfta

With a line up of Harry Whiston (Vocals & Rhythm Guitar), Jake Gregory (Lead Guitar & Synthesizer), Oliver Turtle (Bass Guitar) & Joe Drake (Drums) hailing from Widnes - Syfta are the second act to feature in my Shine A Light Sunday series (last week I concentrated on my Mental Health Awareness Week, interview series over on Instagram).

Already signed to last years Independent Music Awards, Best Small label Scruff of the Neck, the lads burst onto Manchester's indie scene late 2019, arising from the ashes of former band Salvador.

It has been a whirlwind few months for these lads, with a sold out show with The K’s at Manchester’s o2 Ritz followed by capacity debut headline shows at Night People and Liverpool’s Zanzibar. A sold out tour with The Reytons was put on hold, as were scheduled appearances at Y Not, Dot to Dot and Golden Touch festivals, but excitement continues to build for SYFTA

Boasting an impressive rate of productivity, they've already released an EP and three scintillating singles. Flight the latest single was released May 15th and continued the emotive themes of previous releases Breathe and Don’t Matter.

Flight delves deeper into the reliance in relationships on modern technologies, and the resulting impact on young adults in 2020, while synths and low-fi tones are brought to the forefront as the song builds to an emphatic crescendo.

Frontman Harry Whiston stated, “Flight is definitely the most personal song we’ve got - It comes from a moment where I was waiting for an answer and left to struggle with my own thoughts. It was such a cliff-hanger moment. I think it’s quite a relatable situation to be in with everyday modern communications, you’re relying on a response and you are left waiting which leads to a build up of emotions that have nowhere to go. As a song, Flight represents that escalation of internal emotions which can often lead to a destructive outcome.

We all have bands that we're looking forward to seeing play live when COVID has done its thing and life has some semblance of normality, Syfta are one of those bands for me.
