Every now and again, we stumble across an artist who defies categorisation. Jayne Dent aka Me Lost Me the current Artist In Resident at Sage, Gateshead is unequivocally an artist, who defies definition.
Having been described by BBC Radio 6’s Tom Robinson as a “brilliant, peculiar noise”, Me Lost Me album The Good Noise (released November 2020) delights in experimenting with genre, taking influence from folk, electronica, art pop and ambient music to create a beguiling mix of soaring vocals, synth, field recordings and hypnotic rhythms.
The result of this marriage of influences allows her a freedom perhaps not afforded to other artists. I've listened to this album many times and what strikes me more than anything, is that I'm still finding nuances in the production and sounds I've missed previously. There's a real joy in listening to this album that you don't actually get with many records. I put on my headphones, close my eyes and I'm transported to another world.
As with a flock of starlings at twilight, or a wheat field just before summer harvest in a swirling breeze; this record has a fluidity and resonance that leaves the listener absolutely captivated.
One could argue given her status as Artist In Resident, Dent has somewhat of an advantage. That this is exactly the desired outcome/experience this body of work is supposed to leave the listener feeling. To assemble the sounds she has, in such a way as to leave the listener as spellbound as it does is nothing short of remarkable.
This is not just another album - this is an audiophiles utopia.
Summing this album up in one word - transcendental.
